This series contains correspondence of the Ala. Superintendent Education (also known as the Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1868-1875), who directed education in the state prior to the creation of the Dept. of Education in 1919. The records regard a variety of topics. Some correspondence deals with the certification of teachers who have taken exams for certification. Other topics include the locations of high schools to be built in the state, proposed improvements to existing school buildings, reports from the county superintendents of schools regarding topics including payrolls, purchasing and certification. There is information on conferences and meetings of the superintendents as well as letters sent to the Commissioner of Education regarding personal matters and his reply. The correspondence was originally filed in numbered letterboxes. Some boxes contained general correspondence. Other boxes were labeled by subject. Subjects listed include Agricultural Schools, Educational Survey, Examinations, Election Files, County Superintendents and School Locations. Letterboxes 9-45 and 97-105 are missing.
